Halloween can be an eerily fun time for us humans, but for our pets it can become quite unnerving, stressful, and even dangerous. To ensure a happy and safe Halloween for you and your pet take the following precautions.

Pet Safety Tips for Halloween:

1.) To prevent anxiety and stress, place your pet in a quiet, indoor room removed from the loud, boisterous festivities.

2.) Comfort your pet whenever he seeks it. DO NOT force it; let your pet come to you.

3.) Keep decorations, jack-o-lanterns, candy wrappers, and candles out of reach of your pets.

4.) Keep candy, alcohol, and other potentially toxic foods out of reach of your pets. Instead, make pet-specific treats for them.

5.) Avoid dressing up your pets if they appear uncomfortable, stressed, or sheepish. If you do purchase a costume and your pet is receptive to the idea, be wary of rubber bands, and other ingestible items on the costume that may cause potential health risks to your pet. Always supervise your pet to avoid possible mishaps.

6.) Electrical cords should be covered or tacked down so that pets cannot reach them.

7.) Begin bringing pets, especially black cats, inside two weeks prior to Halloween.

8.) Identification tags should be current and legible on each pet.

9.) Keep your pets on their regular feeding and exercise routines to avoid undue stress. However, avoid allowing them outside without supervision.

10.) Be careful that your pet is not able to escape outside through an open door. Taking these simple precautions will help to ensure that you and your pet will avoid potential dangers and enjoy this holiday together.

Ask your veterinarian or local animal shelter for further information on how to keep your pet safe during the holiday season. Happy Halloween!
